Suzanne Vega's name first came to the fore in the 1980s when she began marrying perfect pop melodies with studied, folkish tunes. She managed to scale the heady heights of the singles charts before comfortably settling into her role as an album-based artist, although there was an aberration to this pattern when a dance remix of her song "Tom's Diner" opened up an unexpected audience to Ms. Vega's timeless songs. On this release 16 music videos from various periods of Vega's career are featured. Procol Harum - Live

If you were asked to name some prog bands that were around in the 60s the chances are that the band, Procol Harum, would be overlooked by most. Perhaps this is because most prog fans are in the 35 to 45 age range and are more likely to recall their teenage years – the 70s. Procol Harum is widely associated with the hit single Whiter Shade of Pale, a ballad that makes more than a casual nod in the direction of Bach in-between verses (though it isn’t actually a Bach piece if you’ve ever wondered), and countless appearances on Top of the Pops in 1967. The writing partnership of Gary Brooker (vocals, piano) and Keith Reid was to create an altogether new genre of music – classical (as in classical music) rock that in itself has to be included under the ever reaching progressive umbrella. Delve into Procol Harum’s back catalogue, a great selection of which is included on this Live DVD recorded in December 2001, and any idea you may have had of them being ‘just a pop group’ will be discarded immediately.

Less than a minute into the first track, Bringing Home The Bacon, the instrumentals are definitely prog though the vocals are bluesy which with the addition of a heavy rock sub-level makes for an enjoyable and interesting mix. But prog is always there. One of my favourite tracks, Pandora’s Box, is another good example of this with Tull-like heavy guitar (Geoff Whithorn [sic]) accompanied by deep tonal organ (Mathew [sic] Fisher) the clunk, clunk, clunk of stick on bamboo (Mark Brezicki [sic], drums) filling the pauses and reserve Tull and Fairport bassist, Matt Pegg (son of ‘honest’ Dave Pegg) holding it all together. Homburg even shares a common theme with an excerpt from the latter part of Dark Side Of The Moon (I wonder who copied who {!}, or did they both borrow it from elsewhere?). I can imagine the late, great Ian Dury complete with Blockheads covering Beyond the Pale.

Running time for the concert is 100 minutes (but see Package Features below).


Gary Brooker has worn remarkably well considering his career spans over 40 years. OK, his white hair and beard help him bear more than a passing resemblance to Burl Ives, but we are talking of a very young Burl Ives. Naturally, Procol Harum has had many line-ups over the years, all well documented in the ‘family tree', one of this DVD’s special features. Also included is Procol Harum: Uninhibited which features the band in rehearsal in their studio trying out various tracks including a few not performed at the Copenhagen gig, and comments from Gary and the band. This particular feature lasts for approximately 40 minutes and is as enjoyable as the concert.

Technical Aspects
Picture and sound quality are A1 as should be the case today. The concert was originally filmed for Danish TV and the camera work and editing is gimmick free, i.e. thankfully no swooping, no excessive zooming, no fit-inducing cutting from camera to camera and no nauseating special effects.

Package features
The DVD has a fully animated menu from which can be accessed the band’s family tree, discography, the rehearsal footage and current band members' biographies. The DVD sleeve provides full track listings of both the featured gig and the rehearsal footage. The DVD is multi-region PAL format, 4:3 screen ratio, with Dolby© Digital 5.1 and selectable PCM stereo. The total running time including extras is 150 minutes.

Summary
I was a mere youngster aged nine when A Whiter Shade Of Pale hit the airwaves in 1967 and apart from an odd sighting of A Salty Dog in record shops, I’d all but forgotten the band. So it was a bit of a surprise when watching this DVD that I recognised all but a handful of the tracks performed. Not only that but I hadn’t realised how subliminally heavy Procol Harum actually is. Yes, there are a couple of non-proggy ballads and more than a sniff of blues but even if that’s not your ticket it is all very enjoyable. Indeed, on the basis of the DVD they are on my ‘want to see’ gig list.

Accept - Metal Blast From The Past

Germany’s Accept are one of the true Legends of Heavy Metal and this DVD captures the bands early years to some success. Released as a dual disc, one side features a concert and video film that is chock full of footage from a concert in Osaka Japan (1985) as well as a number of the bands videos from that time as well. The concert was their first in Japan and seems taken at around the time of the Metal Heart album and a couple of the performances leave you with this impression. Accept were one of those bands that you either loved or hated and this was primarily based on singer Udo Dirkschneiders unique voice, his gravelly tone a far cry from some of the screaming vocals coming from Priest and Maiden during this time in Metal history. The live portion of the film originally comes to us as the concert CD and VHS "Staying A Life" and the only omission from the release are a few songs and the guitar solo by Wolf Hoffman. Inter laced between the live footage are the bands video films which by today’s standards are a bit cliché. However, it was great to be able to see Metal bands doing videos back then, and everyone seemed to do them no matter what kind of music they played. A bonus couple of live performances are provided as well in "Live Sophia ‘93" filmed 8 years after the main program on the release. The three songs are "Starlight", "Slaves To Metal", and "Objection Overruled". The lineup which included Dirkschneider, Wolf Hoffman, and Stefan Kaufmann was not to be taken lightly against any of their Metal peers. You can feel the impact they had on their audiences in the concert films as the response during choruses was just over powering.

CD Side: The CD side of the dual disc features a nice number of unreleased audio tracks which are bound to appease all Accept fans. Included are: Rich And Famous, Rocking For The Sun, Morning Sun, Run If You Can, Down And Out, Down And Out, Can’t Stand The Night, Breaker, Burning, and Writing On The Wall.

There is not much in the way of a booklet with the packaging, but the menus on the DVD offer you some functionality. You are able to view the video clips, biography, discography and behind the scenes footage. It’s very comprehensive and should be afforded some more interest as a result of the detail placed on it. At the time of their zenith I was only a casual listener, but I look back on the albums I owned fondly. Accept offered a level of difference to what Metal was at the time and what it was to become. This DVD allows you to experience it once again, and not only see how good the band was live but to recapture the power of some of their songs. Tracks such as "Restless And Wild", "Fast As A Shark" and "Balls To The Wall" are classics of Metal’s song library and sound as fresh today as when they came out. "Fast As A Shark" (1982) was one of the key songs in the soon to be labeled Speed Metal genre. It’s time for you to feel your Metal Heart beating strong with the music of Accept once again.

Video

Video is varied from clip to clip. And the variations are dramatic. The first clip is very soft and undefined with bad black levels. Given it's age, I can forgive it. The next clip is the total opposite. Vibrant, colorful and with very good black levels.

Variations also come down to aspect ratios which range from full frame through 1.85 up to 2.10 at times. Given the diversity of quality, it all leans toward the better quality average which is good. As usual, WV reaches peak bit-rates of 10 throughout the entire presentation so you know you are getting the best compression dvd has to offer.

My favorite would have to be chapter 8 with it's sepia tone look that almost gives the impression of a motion photo rather than motion picture.

Audio

Linear PCM stereo gives you the best possible stereo representation available on dvd at the moment. It's hear to see Warner Vision continuing to use this for their presentations and avoiding the dreaded Dolby Digital 2 channel compressed format.

With clips varying in date and quality, the audio tends to represent the best of their respective situations which on the whole is good. All clips have a great dynamic range to them with well balanced vocals and instruments. Neither are too powerful for the other.

Extras

The menu system is simple with a frame from each clip as the selectable option.

THe inner sleeve of the disc shows various shots of Clapton in recent guise and it's scary to think how much he has aged of late. He looks totally different.

Overall

A very good collection of his greatest hits with some real classics amongst the bunch.

Highly recommended for Clapton fans who dread buying the current VHS release.
