Review
Performance 8.5 / Sound 9
Featuring Art Tatum on piano, Ben Webster on tenor sax, Red Callender on bass, and Bill Douglass on drums, this album's title says it all. It's called a 'masterpiece' for a reason. Listening to this disc gives one the chance to listen to these jazz virtuosos at their best. Tatum does work on a piano and Webster on a sax that is simply remarkable. These four take classics such as 'Have You Met Miss Jones,' 'My One And Only Love,' 'Night And Day,' and they turn them into benchmarks.

JVC's gotten themselves into a good niche here, taking classic Pablo albums and remastering them. It's impossible to give the album a bad review as it's already classic and JVC's just making it better. And, with this one in particular, they've done a great job. Not only in the remastering or in placing the original liner notes in the packaging, but in that they've added tracks. Usually, the problem with these JVC remasters is that they're too short. Not really JVC's fault, as the album originally was probably only thirty-five minutes long, but today that just won't cut it. Thankfully, on this one, JVC's trekked out alternate tracks for 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Have You Met Miss Jones' leaving this reviewer precious little to quibble over. Jason Karsh
