Brozman's latest investigation of obscure world music traditions takes him to La Reunion, a dot of land in the Indian Ocean. The French discovered the uninhabited isle of La Reunion in 1700 and populated it with African, Indian, and Arab slaves. Reunion's indigenous music grew from this blend of cultures, and until recently, was seldom heard off the island. In the '70s, Rene Lacaille led Reunion's first folk/rock band, adding the twist, cha cha, polka, flamenco, and jazz to the mix. Brozman met Lacaille five years ago, and they began collaborating on the music that became DIGDIG. Both men play a variety of instruments, and are joined by two percussionists for a solid set of traditional and extemporaneous excursions full of deliriously entertaining music making. "Zi Bi Pi Blues" shows off Brozman's slide guitar mastery, riding a 6/8 tempo that mixes Reunion's sega with a bouncy Andean rhythm, accented by Lacaille's propulsive accordion.
