And if that's Latin and Brazilian jazz, all the merrier. Obviously, it will be interesting to see how these 12 tunes match up to the images of the movie, but on its own, this disc is a great sampler of top-notch music from this genre. There's Paquito D'Rivera's smoky, romantic "Panamericana"; Eliane Elias' lively piano romp "Samba Triste"; the artful big-band flavored "Earth Dance" (by Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band); and even a thoughtful bit of romance from Michel Camilo (the classically influenced "From Within"). Other legends appearing here include Gato Barbieri, Tito Puente, Chucho Valdez, and Chico O'Farrill. It's the kind of disc you might put in to keep the party going. — Jonathan Widran |

A film by Oscar winning director, Fernando Trueba documenting latin jazz artists has been released. Eliane Elias beautifully represents Brazil in the film and on the recording on Blue Note Records. Look for perfromances in the next 18 months of the Calle 54 All-Star Band which will feature Eliane in the lineup.
This film was selected as the 3rd best film of the year by the NY Times , and is being considered one of the most important documentaries to be made about Latin/Jazz music. It is playing now in theaters in Spain and France and has been critically acclaimed and receiving rave reviews. It was offcially released in the United States in April 2001. Gene Seymor wrote a review at New York Newsday ending with:
