Also new on the ever-growing roster of Spanish Arise Records are Swedish FRETERNIA, who had been one of the victims of the bankruptcy of Loud'n'Proud Records a while back. "A Nightmare Story" now shows the band back on track and I must say that I have grown really fond of this album.
Not that it features any all too original tracks or elements, but the five Swedes have managed to find an excellent balance between catchiness, crunchy guitars, keyboards, gripping melodies and well-dosed choirs, everything forged together into a damn good package by the excellent production of Studio Underground, where already TERROR 2000, ZONATA and STEEL ATTACK had recorded their last albums.
You all know that I am in general a big fan of Power Metal, but still I do not try to mask anything here. In the midst of the countless clones and at best mediocre copies, FRETERNIA manage to bring in some fresh wind still, the guitars have considerably more crunch than many of their compadres, singer Pasi Humppi has a quite original voice and style that is not far away from being a trademark and the keyboards are only used supportive to the band-sound, no question.
The songs all are dynamic, energetic and driving and offer enough variety to please every Power Metal-fan out there, who can see beyond the usual clichйs. Be it "Arrival", "Shadowdancers" or "Battle Of Minds", surely not the most original stuff, but different than most and just very good Power Metal with some crunch, far above average, so trust me on FRETERNIA!
