Review
Track for track, this is Simon & Garfunkel's best album. By 1968, Simon had shed his more precious tendencies as a songsmith. Meanwhile, the duo and coproducer and engineer Roy Halee had become adept studio technicians. "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" displayed the kind of sonic breadth that would flower even more fully two years later with "The Boxer" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Bits of whimsy ("Punky's Dilemma," "At the Zoo") and melancholy ("Old Friends," "A Hazy Shade of Winter") complete this autumnal album. Ultradisc's 24-karat-gold version of this title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Steven Stolder
The thing that is most striking about "Bookends" is that as much as it is an improvement over the previous three Simon & Garfunkle efforts, it barely suggests the great leap forward that would be the duo's final and greatest album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." From the vantage point of hindsight you cannot help but listen to "Save the Life of My Child" and anticipate what was to come with "The Boxer." All of the facets as Paul Simon as a songwriter are clearly present here from the lyricism of "America" and the "Bookends Theme," to the playfulness of "Punky's Dilemma" and "At the Zoo." The "first side" of the album ends with the effective triptych of the "Voices of Old People," "Old Friends," and the "Bookends Theme." I have been listening to this album for decades and still find those voices recorded by Garfunkle at NYC nursing homes to be compelling, as is the poignancy they bring to the two short songs that follow. It makes you realize there are not a lot of folk songs that talk about the plight of the elderly (I might think of one after I submit this review, but I have been kicking it around in my mind for a while today and nothing has broken through to the surface yet). It is equally hard to listen to "Mrs. Robinson" and not instantly conjure up Dustin Hoffman telling Anne Bancroft, "I think you are trying to seduce me," but listen to the song and remind yourself it really has nothing to do with the movie even though it is filled with Simon & Garfunkle songs. Finally, as evidence that Paul Simon was a major poet of his generation, read over the lyrics to "A Hazy Shade of Winter," a song that certainly has one of his most evocative titles.комметарии от
