Review:
WHO’S THIS THEN?
It’s a band called Culture Club who were lead by the flamboyant, colourful and determinedly single-minded Boy George (born George O’Dowd in my hometown of Welling). The band had what pundits might call "a string of hits" from 1982 to their (or rather George’s) drug-assisted demise in 1986. George returned in 1987, semi-clean, with a number one cover of the David Gates song Everything I Own. This was also covered by Ken Boothe in the early 1970s to similar effect. The rest of the band consisted of Roy Hay (bass), Mikey Craig (guitar) and Jon Moss (drums). The band were one of the stream of British artists in the early 80s taking their New Wave sound over to the States and making a successful career out of it. Peddling a pleasant mix of disco, pop and reggae through their brief career, they reformed in 1999 for a one-off album and tour to pay the rent.
WHAT'S THIS THEN?
This is Boy George & co's first greatest hits collection from 1987. Looking back it would have been easy for this album to fall flat on its face after Boy George's sudden appearance on the scene in 1982, peak in 1984 and subsequent demise in 1986. This Time features all their 80s hits from the debut of Do You Really Want To Hurt Me to the comeback single of 1986, Move Away. Frankly, given their four year tenure, it’s the only hits compilation of theirs you’ll ever need
Track List:
Karma Chameleon
Church Of The Poison Mind
Miss Me Blind
Time (Clock Of The Heart)
It’s A Miracle
Black Money
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
Move Away
I’ll Tumble 4 Ya
Love Is Love
The War Song
Victims
I’ll Tumble 4 Ya (Us 12 Remix)
It’s A Miracle / Miss Me Blind (Us 12 Remix)
