Review: [by Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms] Houk are a genuine phenomenon in Poland, a band led by a recognised Christian rock singer/songwriter, Darek Malejonek. Yet this band has had a series of hit singles in the Polish charts! What's more, the music contains a straight ahead message for Generation Xers in a style which is mainly the death metal typified by the opening title cut and "Soul Ammunition III". Hall in Polish and half in English there are some surprises here including the heavy reggae lilt of "Good Will. Woman" and a song I definitely wouldn't want to announce on the radio called "Zyje W Tym Miescie" which might all seem incongruous at first but seems to fit into the band's overall sound typified by the deep thundering guitars and bass on "Love". Darek was saved as a result of No Longer Music's ministry when he was already a successful rock musician. He has since embraced his faith with passion and this album marks his first mainstream success with an out and out Christian message. All goes to prove that if the music is hoi, it'll knock down the walls of prejudice and you don't get many finer slabs of death metal than Houk's epic "God Is Love". Write for details of how to get a copy and reinforce the speakers in your stereo while you wait for it to arrive! |
