| THE TUNES ON "NIGHTLIFE" beg to be performed live, which explains why several of the tracks were used in their musical, written with Paul Harvey [of "Beautiful Thing" fame]. The musical "Closer to Heaven" had a short run in London's West End in 2001. The plot? Quite simple... Dave [a straight Irish lad] moves to London, works as bartender in a gay club. Nobody believes he's straight. The club's gay owner's straight daughter re-enters his life, and quickly befriends Dave. They date for a few months, Dave starts to contemplate a life in show biz, meets Lee [a gay east-end drug dealing lad], they fool around, and then all hell breaks loose. Drugs, drinking, showbiz, clubbing, bartenders, dancers, boybands, sex, parenting, sexuality... death. Flamboyantly gimmicky, catchy, poppy, flashy... and true-to-life. Seeing it twice, it moved me more than any other stage production has. |
