20 Years of Sonic Adventures: The Best of Vollenweider from the years 1982-1999! CD Extra! Includes an unreleased video for "Pearls & Tears"
In the 20-year span of his recording career, Andreas Vollenweider has sold over eight million albums worldwide with his trademark sound. He invented the electro-acoustic harp in 1975 and helped launch an entire musical genre.
Since the first album from Andreas Vollenweider & Friends Behind the Gardens, Behind the Wall, Under the Tree (MK 37793) caused an international sensation in 1981, Vollenweider's musical expression has embraced the environmental and peace movements; charted in the U.S. in pop, classical and jazz charts; been heard in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Kennedy Center; won a Grammy Award for the 1984 album Down To The Moon (MK 42255); and encompassed orchestral, world and improvisational elements.
The Essential Andreas Vollenweider has been personally compiled by the artist from the key songs of his creative development. Likewise, the older recordings have been mixed and remastered by Vollenweider himself. The CD is 24-bit digitally remastered and remixed, and includes an unreleased video "Pearls & Tears", playable on PC and Mac computers.
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
THE ESSENTIAL ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER provides an excellent service by skimming the cream from the Swiss harpist's numerous albums over a 20-year period. The collection showcases Vollenweider's modified electric harp, yet it also demonstrates his amazing stylistic range and sense of experimentation. The collection spans from his popular 1980s material, including the space music of albums like CAVERNA MAGICA and the moody, filmic music of his Grammy-winning DOWN TO THE MOON.
In the '90s, Vollenweider moved increasingly toward a pan-global sound, drawing on the indigenous music of Asian, African, Irish, Eastern European, and South and North American cultures. Yet Vollenweider's compositions remain distinctly his own, blending all of these elements into a sometimes-rhythmic, sometimes-cinematic, but always evocative and atmospheric style. THE ESSENTIAL works nicely as both an overview of Vollenweider's career and a fine introduction to the ambitious, multi-faceted music of this New Age pioneer.
