Clarinettist Reginald Kell was one of the last century's finest recreative musicians. It was his great accomplishment to introduce a vocalized and expressive style at a time when the classical clarinet, to use his words, was "usually played cold and straight". Like that of Fritz Kreisler and Pablo Casals, which is similarly suffused with warm individual qualities, Kell's playing emulated the human voice, the most communicative of all instruments. Though his influence on succeeding generations has been less widespread than one might have hoped, Kell's playing, as these recordings show, still provides an unrivalled example of the art of classical clarinet playing. For as music critic Irving Kolodin wrote: "Mr. Kell is more than a musician in a hundred - he is an artist unparalleled in his field."
