"Jozef Kazimierz Hofmann (born January 20, 1876 in Krakow, Austria-Hungary; died February 16, 1957 in Los Angeles), was a Polish-American virtuoso pianist and composer. Many connoisseurs consider him one of the greatest pianists of all time."
"Hofmann was the greatest pianist who ever lived. Of this, there can be no doubt."
The Complete Josef Hofmann contain eight volumes (a planned ninth has not been released yet). The following is from the notes:
"....this series of Hofmann recordings....is more than a routine exercise in nostalgia. It is actually a public service. It brings alive again the playing of one of the most colossal pianists in history: a pianist with a tremendous and original personality, a pianist of the grand manner, a pianist who contributed a romantic approach with a good measure of classicism, a pianist whose technical finesse remains the ne plus ultra of the art, a pianist who will serve for all time as the exemplar of musical elegance coupled to fire and brilliance." Harold Schoenberg
