• Pergolesi and Stabat Mater seem to be an indivisible unity. In his very short life (1710-1736) Pergolesi enjoyed a limited success. But his universal posthumous fame, especially concerning the Stabat Mater, was unprecedented. Thus many of his instrumental works were (intentionally) wrongly attributed.
• This set contains an intimate performance of the Stabat Mater and the lesser-known Salve Regina with soprano Angharad Gryffydd Jones and tenor Lawrence Zazzo. The instrumental ensemble is lead by organist Timothy Brown.
• However Pergolesi did write some more great vocal, mainly sacred works. There are also some (secular) chamber cantatas, including a set of 4 printed and even reprinted shortly after the composer’s death. They have all been written in a rich and expressive style for soprano and accompaniment.
• Alessandra Rossi De Simone sings the text lovingly and expressively. The at times sparse accompaniment is provided by the Ensemble Concerto.
