| Hm... There is a band from Sweden that makes music that I supposedly like, already founded way back in 1993, releases albums and only now, with their fourth album "Sign Of Madness" I finally cross their way. Odd... I am talking about d**nED NATION, a quartet that contains at least one member that I know, singer Matti Alfonzetti, previously with JAGGED EDGE and SKIN TRADE. So what are the guys playing? Crunchy Hard Rock with some Metal influences, so basically my thing, no? Yes and no in the end. The quartet tries its best not to be thrown together with the countless Melodic Rock bands, as they for one do not have a single ballad and for the other have quite some steam in the guitars and also the rhythm section, which in combination with the powerful vocals of Mr Alfonzetti stirs up a quite good mixture. And he (Matti) is, what keeps d**nED NATION in the end above the waterline, because despite the basically good guitar work, the songs get a bit lengthy over the whole playing time and start to get somewhat repetitive, which drags the whole thing down a bit, but I don’t want to imply that "Sign Of Madness" was a complete black out, no, they have a bunch of songs that can really convince, for example "Stranded", the straighter "Wall Of Illusion", the surprisingly heavy title track, the stomping "Facing The Enemy" or the powerful "Slave", just unfortunately looking at the whole album the Swedes lose some creative steam. Without a doubt there is potential, but let me ask, if this is still enough for a fourth album or if hope mostly is lost already? I will leave the decision to you and wait for the next one to pass my final judgement. (Online July 2, 2005) |
