This racially mixed South African band that cleverly combines jazz harmonies, odd horn charts and exotic rhythms is led by British drummer and producer Andrew Missingham. Emerging from a unique global music project established to celebrate the new South Africa, which brought new and established South African musicians together with international artists and producers, Barungwa recorded Barungwa- The Messengers, where London street jazz meets South African street dance.
*****************************************************************A unique musical project recorde and performed in South Africa culminated in the CD "The Messengers" and led to Barungwa making an impressive and critically-acclaimed debut at the '95 London Jazz Festival. This unique cross-cultural collaboration, with London street jazz meeting South African street dance has resulted in a stratling fusion of jazz, township, African rhythms and dance beats and was produced by London-based drummer Andrew Missingham. Also featured in an exciting lineup is young Jo'burg pianist Moses Molelekwa (whose debut album "Finding One's Self" recently won a SAMA award for Best Jazz Album), British sax player Chris Bowden, the powerful poetic vocalist Max Mntambo and Cape Town guitarist and singer Dave Mayekana.
