REVIEW
AREA was one of the most important musical projects in Italy.Their first record was made in 1973 by alternative label CRAMPS. The sound was a mixture of electro-acoustic experimental music (similar to John Cage work), jazz-rock, mediterranean and middle-east folkmusic. The lyrics' contents of their songs (written by Gianni Sassi aka Frankestein)has a strong political and phylosophical environment. Demetrio Stratos' technical experiments of the voice with vocal harmonics and diplophonie were very important for the AREA's sound. The Demetrio's voice was an avantgarde instrument used by John CAGE in 1974 for the composition "MESOSTICS". Before his death in 1979, Demetrio Stratos recorded two solo studio albums of voice experimentation: "METRODORA" and "CANTARE LA VOCE". After his sudden death the group changed in a cool jazz -rock band without the experimental feeling of the beginnings. At the end of 1996, Area come back, after a long time of silence, with a new release called "CHERNOBYL 7991". The new line-up is composed by two formers, Giulio Capiozzo and Patrizio Fariselli, with the collaboration of Paolo dalla Porta on the bass and F.Condorelli on guitars. The new Area band keeps the old feeling of the firsts albums.
