What could an album from a former Pink Floyd cover band possibly sound like? Well, before I state the obvious, RPWL has succeeded on many levels in taking their Pink Floyd influences and incorporating them into their own unique brand of psych/prog/pop. True, most Floyd fans will find some definite similarities in many of the melodies on God Has Failed, but to this listener they are fresh and so extremely enjoyable that it doesn't feel like a rip off of Floyd whatsoever.

RPWL is a four piece German band who are starting to get some recognition in the progressive music scene. Their name comes from the first letter of the last name of the members. God Has Failed is basically their debut album, though they had an album released under the name Violet District. Released in 2000, God Has Failed was hailed by many in the progressive scene as one of the top three releases of that year.

God Has Failed is filled with sonic landscapes and lush full melodies. The vocals and the atmosphere that the music creates are the highlights for me. The album opens with the three part song, the third part is presented later in the album, Hole In The Sky and from the first few notes it is obvious that they used to be a Floyd cover band. And once Yogi Lang starts singing you would swear David Gilmour did the vocal duties. And once the line I set my controls for the heart of the sun to reach for the stratosphere is sung, well do I need to say anymore. He doesn't however do the Gilmour mimic through the whole album giving way to a different type of singing voice on the next song, Who Do You Think We Are. The last song and title track of the album, which is a short acoustic number, Yogi is at the Gilmour impression again and does it very well. He is a dead ringer for the legendary guitarist/vocalist. This whole album is right up my alley and I donut really mind all of the Pink Floyd influences as the band really develops its own sound and vibe. There really isn't a bad song on the album, with the two part song What I Need and In Your Dreams being two more highlights from an excellent release.

There may be just a little bit too much Pink Floyd plagiarism here for some and not enough prog here for others. But if you are looking for some great new music along the lines of Porcupine Tree, RPWL is definitely a band to investigate. If you like this type of music, dont let these guys pass you by. A wonderful and highly enjoyable album!
