| Great album. One of my favorites. From the original British master mixes, courtesy of Sony Music. It was hard to master. Very dynamic; all the splices broke endlessly. The masters had a sort of "boxy" sound. Listen to some of the orchestral stuff on side one (oops, I mean on the songs before that Beatle soundalike that opened part two). Very "studio" and enclosed like. I couldn't do anything about it, but I made sure that the top end "shimmered" to give some lifelike-ness to the instruments. Also I used the Ampex 351-2P for a "special" tube boost. I loved that album back in the 1970's and remember my girlfriend's excitement (she worked at UA in Hollyweird at the time) whenever Jeff Lynne would hang out at the office. He gave her the UA test pressings for "Eldorado" which I used as a ref when I mastered the Gold disk for DCC. One of the few that I kept an analog copy tape on. I play it every now and then on my Tube Ampex machine. It still sounds magical to me. Bob Irwin found the original masters for me. Thanks, Bob. |
