Promised:
Bif Naked will release The Promise through her Fontana North-distributed HRM Records label on May 5.
Naked (real name Beth Torbert) was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 months ago and almost immediately began to write and record her sixth studio album in between chemotherapy and radiation therapy sessions.
"I was determined to make this new record if it was the last thing I did," says Naked, who's now feeling much stronger and healthier. "I wrote songs from my bed.
"When it was time to record, the studio was moved so it was a block up the street from my condo... all I had to do was to force myself to walk up the hill, with my bald head and in my pyjamas - like Quasimodo. The headphones would constantly slip off my shiny head.
"Some days were good and some days were horrific. Sometimes I couldn't do a thing, other days I could only sing for an hour and then crawl home to my bed. We took it day by day."
The Promise was primarily produced and mixed by Neurosonic singer/guitarist Jason Darr, though lead single "Sick," "Bluejay" and "You'll Never Know" were mixed by Juno Award winner Mike Fraser (Aerosmith, AC/DC).
"Everyone has something in their lives that makes them angry, sick or fed-up," Naked says of the single. "Of course, chemo made me sick.
"But there are a lot of other things going on in this world, like the damage to the environment, hunger and homelessness - especially children - unethical treatment of animals, the refusal of certain governments to provide their citizens with basic human rights, and so much more. Most of us feel this way about something, and I hope everyone can relate to the song."
"I Won't Cry (Fuck You 2)" is available as a free download on Naked's website, and a video for the song will be posted online in the coming weeks. Fans have an opportunity to appear in the clip lip-synching the song via a contest on her site that runs until March 8.
Naked’s last album, Superbeautifulmonster, was released internationally in 2006. Her other records include a self-titled effort, the Canadian platinum-certified I Bificus and 2001's Purge, which was nominated for a best rock album Juno.
No dates have been announced, but Naked will tour in support of The Promise.
"Performing is my passion," says the 37-year-old. "I owe it to myself and to my fans to keep evolving and to keep challenging myself, and I just can't wait to rock."
