Review: by Chris LongHey, wait a second! Are these guys really from this area? This CD doesn’t even contain any tired, re-hashed blues riffs or wannabe scream-o-metal vocals. They must be martians or something, right? Well, I checked it out and apparently these fellas are actually human. And Villa Said, the sophomore record from Central Florida’s own Cook Trio is without a doubt the most unique and sophisticated record to EVER come across my desk.
Reviving the European acoustic guitar based style of instrumental music known as Gypsy Jazz, The Cook Trio magically recreates the genre made popular in France decades ago. One of the truly fascinating qualities of Gypsy Jazz is use of rhythm guitar as a percussive instrument. And the intriguing use of dynamics also helps to make Gypsy Jazz an exciting and unique style that remains popular around the world even today.
The group is as compelling live as they are on record and they can be seen performing regularly at some of central Florida’s finest venues such as Orlando’s Ritz-Carlton and Melbourne’s King Center.
