QUOTE:
I had heard quite a few good things about Spanish LORIEN, so I put "Secrets Of The Elder" into the player with quite some hopes, also knowing that Spain has a whole bunch of highly interesting bands to offer to the fan of these more traditional and melodic styles. And LORIEN deliver the goods in a typically Power Metal fashion, too typical some might say.
Actually the problem of a missing identity that is prevalent in most of today's Power Metal scene also applies to LORIEN, but admittedly also in other styles not too many bands manage to really create their own sound, which allows them to be recognized right away, so as said elsewhere before, if the music is well done and all, the lack of identity will not be held against a band that much anymore.
LORIEN are somewhere in the middle, so to say, they are not purely generic, but at the same time they are not in a class of quality yet that would make them stand out from the main stream of Power Metal bands. Songs like "Don't Be Afraid" or "The Voice Of Saruman" all are very well played and also well arranged and written, but they just lack that certain last bit to make them special, despite some female vocals in "The Silent Mermaid" and "The Island Of The Dragon".
Still I can attest LORIEN a solid debut that overall already stands above many of their genre colleagues and which they definitely can build on still, if you haven't grown tired of Power Metal yet, then you can check these Spaniards out, good listen!
