Another entry in the reissue madness that began in earnest as soon as the Who announced their farewell tour in 1982, Rarities, Vol. 1: 1966-1968 -- along with its companion piece, Rarities, Vol. 2: 1970-1973 -- was a valuable addition to the group's catalog at the time, but its worth has faded over the years. In this case, "rarities" does not mean outtakes. Instead, the album contains non-LP singles, B-sides and EP cuts. There are some great songs here -- "Instant Party (Circles)," "Disguises," "In the City," an alternate "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand," the terrific, underrated "Dogs" -- and it does make for a good listen, but all of the tracks have subsequently been reissued, either on rarities collections like Who's Missing or as bonus tracks. For most contemporary collectors -- those who just want copies of the songs, not the original singles or EPs -- the reissues are the items worth seeking out, not Rarities, Vols. 1 & 2.
