Review (AMG)
Kind of a catch-all record, Hey Jude was released very late in the Beatles' career, and it collects several singles and B-sides that never made it onto "official" albums. As a record though, it works quite well, and given the Beatles' genius, especially in the area of creating exquisite and ultraprogressive singles, it comes as no surprise. "Paperback Writer" works particularly well, not having aged at all in the three years after its release. The bass guitar sound on this record is especially revolutionary. A couple of recent tracks, "Old Brown Shoe" and "The Ballad of John and Yoko," make their vinyl debut here, and as usual give the consumer excellent value for the money. "Old Brown Shoe" (originally slated for Joe Cocker to record) is one of George Harrison's great lost classics, and the Beatles' ensemble playing on this track belies the tension that was prevalent during the group's final days.

Вот что говорит Стив Хоффман про UK издание:

QUOTE (Steve Hoffman):
I bought my "UK Export" Apple HEY JUDE LP at Tower in the early 1970s. Five bucks well spent. It just sounded amazing. So let me ask this. WHY in hell did ABBEY ROAD use true masters to make this comp when the didn't for the suckiest MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR ever on Parlophone?

TRUE MASTERS!!!
Here is what is sad (well, silly, not sad). HEY JUDE aka "The Beatles Again" was conceived by the Capitol dudes as a "filler album" of leftover stuff. They skipped a bunch of songs that were never on old Capitol LP's for some reason (Misery, I'm Down, etc.) and the hodge-podge that resulted made us young Beatles fans scratch our heads back then for sure. The silly thing is that when EMI UK cut the LP they actually went back to the original mixes whereas the Capitol version used dubs of dubs of dubs. So, the people that originated the concept released a crappy sounding version and the UK folks recompiled from the original masters. Why is that silly? Well, when EMI UK decided to release the Capitol version of MAGICAL MISERY TOUR they didn't bother to use their own master tapes but cabled Capitol, Hollywood for 15 ips copy tapes of their own songs even though the actual masters were right down stairs. How stoopid is that, campers? So EMI ends up with 5th generation MMT tapes for their LP, they mark them as "MASTER" and MFSL/MoFi uses those same crappy tapes years later for the Beatles Box. How much does that suck?

:punk:

Dr. Ebbetts' new release of this pressing is far, far better than the Black Triangle. Absolutely no question.
