AMG EXPERT REVIEW Compared to Boston's smash debut, which was nothing short of a revolution in 1976, its second album was a disappointment. Of course, the sonic trademarks are all there: Brad Delp's pristine, soaring vocal harmonies; the supersonic guitars of Tom Scholz; and Scholz's masterful production sheen. The problem is a lack of great material. With the exception of the triumphant title track, the songs on Don't Look Back sound rushed and uninspired. Each track comes off like an attempted rewrite of something from Boston, and the lack of excitement this time around is conspicuous. Still, it was a number one success in 1978 due to two years' worth of anticipation for its release. Andy Hinds |
