Review: La Etnnia (the Ethnics - formed by The Pimienta brothers) were the first rappers in Bogotá, in the 1980's, after hip-hop and American urban culture began to surface in Las Cruces: "We were in a ghetto and we started singing about what we saw happening. The streets are full of stories and we are like chroniclers". In Colombia, which is a prime example of the flourishing underground hip-hop scene in Latin America, veteran rappers like La Etnnia include lyrics about poverty, corruption and war in their songs. Among other artists, LA ETNNIA was appointed UN-Habitat Messengers of Truth (at the Forum Barcelona 2004) due to their social commitment, which implies creating awareness on various issues touching on poverty, social exclusion, and youth at risk. The United Nations acknowledges Hip-Hop can be a useful tool to convey its messages to young people worldwide and to contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals. Out of this belief came the idea of the "Messengers of Truth", which involves hip-hop groups nominated by the UN who are going to dedicate their time, their art and their energy to spread the Millennium Development Goals and support initiatives for the development of young people.

LA ETNNIA despliega una excelsa (y reveladora) radiografía de la Urbe Global. Por ello, en el marco del Forum Barcelona 2004, este grupo de Hip-Hop recibió el premio Messengers of Truth (Mensajeros de la Verdad), instaurado por UN-Habitat de Naciones Unidas. Muy recientemente ha publicado su nuevo disco, "Real", un trabajo para el que han contado con algunos invitados de auténtico lujo, como es el caso de Domingo Padilla (productor entre otros de KRS One y Big Punisher), Full Nelson o Tomorrowz Weaponz. Además, el disco ha sido masterizado en los Estudios Sterling Sound de Nueva York. En la actualidad, con 4 trabajos ya publicados, La Etnnia es considerada como una de las formaciones pioneras del Hip-Hop en Colombia y es uno de los grupos de más proyección en toda Sudamérica.
