Ireneusz Socha commissioned music from some of the most creative young Polish composers such as the accordionist Jaroslaw Bester (The Cracow Klezmer Band, Bester Quartet), the pianist Boleslaw Blaszczyk, the multiinstrumentalist Tomasz Gwincinski, the electronic sound artist Wojt3k Kucharczyk (Molr Drammaz, The Complainer & The Complainers, Mik.Musik!), the guitarist Raphael Roginski (Cukunft, Shofar, Mizrach), the clarinetist Pawel Szamburski (Meritum, Horny Trees), the Ukrainian master saxophonist Yuriy Yaremchuk and the multiinstrumentalist Patryk Zakrocki (Tupika) as an unorthodox and an unusually varied homage to one of the great forgotten Polish composers Szymon Laks (1901-1983) and his "Elegy of Little Jewish Towns". "Sztetlach" was recorded between 2002 and 2004. We based on two texts: Szymon Laks's score of "Elegy for the Jewish Little Towns" and Jaroslaw Lipszyc's poem "Little Towns 2.1" – the latter being a present-day 'commentary' on Antoni Slonimski's poem. Titles of the pieces are Yiddish names of some little but significant towns. Referentially, "Sztetlach" is a part of the tradition of midrashes and haggadahs. It musically follows in the footsteps of "commentaries' on the oral and the written tradition within Judaism. These new readings of the Laks's piece are not merely some sentimental journeys but instead they speak of a potential the "new music' possesses. Laks found out that music might kill first hand. This CD is dedicated to the music that keeps company with life. As Chris Cutler recommends: "A hugely ambitious work, with an impressive ensemble of composers and instrumentalists performing a collection of pieces that feature mostly small, very differently instrumented ensembles, very varied - from percussive orchestra to solo clarinet".
