| SPOILER (Label info & catalog) | The Marginal Records label from Belgium operated between 1994 and 1998. They specialised in producing limited runs (500 of each, so it's said) of well compiled releases from pre-Beatles acts that the bigger companies who owned the rights were neglecting entirely. They tended to concentrate on white female singers for a long time, but got their groove on with releases by Motown and similar artists in the latter part of their catalog. The CDs themselves featured no more than a track listing and writer credits. The artwork was usually from an artist's original LP, but boasting to be an Ultimate Collection or Very Best Of with extra tracks. They invariably had thirty or more tracks and quite crisp sound, causing one to think that may have had access to master tapes. The CDs give little away, other than to say they used the CDR (Cedarization) method of cleaning up the sound. The track selections were clearly made by dedicated fans as they always featured rare cuts or non-hit singles as well as the hits and as such, provided excellent career overviews. Marginal was never troubled by licensing restrictions caused by artists switching labels - they put 'em all on the one disc. Marginal's releases were often closely followed by official releases from companies holding the rights, which indicates that Marginal was often the catalyst for the major labels to get off their arses and actually have a look at what they had in their back catalog.
