Il funk di New Orleans, e la sua stessa storia, sono rappresentati dai fratelli neri Neville, Arthur e Aaron.

Art esordi` ai tempi dell'high school, con un complessino di amichetti, gli Hawketts. Nel 1955 ebbero un successo nazionale con il Mardi Gras Mambo, e, quando Art dovette partire per il servizio militare, il suo posto venne preso da Aaron. Aaron divenne famoso con canzoni che fondevano il rhythm and blues e lo stile di canto yodel del country, come Over You (1960), Waiting At The Station (1962) e Tell It Like It Is (1966), mentre Art rimase dietro le quinte pur avendo del materiale migliore (Zing Zing, 1958; e All These Things, 1962). Alla fine degli anni '60 i due fratelli vennero ingaggiati da Allen Toussaint (suoi i brani accreditati a un fantomatico Naomi Neville), per fare da back-up band dei suoi studios.

Nacquero (1966) i Meters, una formazione modellata sulla falsariga di Booker T & The MG's con una delle piu` grandi sezioni ritmiche della musica nera (drummer Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste and bassist George Porter), che avrebbero adattato il vecchio e pesante rhythm and blues pianistico al funky elettrico di Sly Stone, soprattutto nei loro strumentali da ballo (Cissy Strut, sul primo omonimo album del 1969, loro capolavoro). Attraverso album come Look-A Py Py (1970) e Struttin' (1972) divennero gli ambasciatori itineranti della musica di New Orleans, senza un hit nazionale ma con decine di hit regionali. Cissy Strut (Island, 1975) e` una raccolta di strumentali dei Meters. The Original Funkmasters (Instant, 1992) collects the singles. Good Old Funky Music (Rounder, 1990), including the jazz-psychdelic jam Voodoo, and The Meters Jam (Rounder, 1991) collect unreleased material.

Nel 1975 i Neville fecero parte dei musicisti che registrarono il country-rock (Brother John) e il reggae ubriaco Meet The Boys con i Wild Tchoupitoulas (1976), una tribu' di indiani neri che si occupa del cerimoniale del carnevale (capitanata dal "grande capo" zio Neville).
