Hey Mercedes was one of those bands that everyone expected a lot from. When you’ve got a name like Braid behind you, expectations for Braid 2 come fast and furious.

This is why Loses Control is significant. It marks the end of the Braid comparisons and proves Hey Mercedes as a self-contained band in its own right. The songs have graduated to more carefully considered entities, rather than very straightforward rock as in Everynight Fireworks.

This album is a logical progression from their Weekend EP, taking its time to lead you somewhere rather than vying for your attention. It’s in this zone that a band’s true colors are allowed to bloom, and we are beginning to see shades of this in Loses Control. Diversity of song structure, richer song development and crescendos make a much more interesting listen than the rather deadpan punchiness of Hey Mercedes’ previous releases.
