LEE KONITZ - Motion (1961) Motion Catalog #4400655102 compact disc reissue release date 6/10/2003 original releasing label Verve Records Review Regarded by many aficionados as Lee Konitz's finest album, Motion is improvisation at its purest: no arrangements, no rehearsals, just inspired seat-of-the-pants blowing. The mix of Konitz's ethereal alto saxophone and Elvin Jones's volcanic drumming provides a unique chemistry. This very spontaneous LP (altoist Lee Konitz had never played before in a trio with bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones) is quite successful and enjoyable. Konitz and his trio perform five familiar standards, stretching out on such tunes as "I Remember You," "All of Me" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." The music is searching but melodic, exploratory yet accessible. This is one of Konitz's better albums from the era and is long overdue to be reissued on CD. Tracks 1. I Remember You 2. All of Me 3.
