Two Lone Swordsmen: Nin-Com-Pop rmx [3:23] Lali Puna is the Munich-based electro-experimental project of founding member Valerie Trebeljahr, now expanded to a four-piece, and this is their particularly interesting remix project - featuring some big juicy names – one that could quite easily be overlooked if it wasn’t for the likes of us ;) As musicians, Lali Puna appear to have found the perfect blend between softly commercialised electro-pop and the microscopically complex programming that often burdens many of their peers. I Thought I Was Over That remixes their influences and also features remixes from some of Lali Puna’s own admirers; here we find them collaborating with Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass), remixing, and being remixed by Two Lone Swordsmen, with additional contributions from the likes of To Rococo Rot, and Ninja Tune’s Sixtoo. Notable tracks begin with Lali Puna’s crisply santised mix of the shoegaze-founding imperialists Slowdive on the tasteful 40 Days, swiftly followed by the aforementioned collaboration with Bomb The Bass on Clear Cut – a gloriously trippy slow groover. Further on, we find Lali Puna mixing Two Lone Swordsmen’s It’s Not The Worst I’ve Looked. Taken from their excellent y2k album Tiny Reminders, I always did love this beautifully estranged, yet highly emotional track, and Lali Puna have stuck quite closely to the original but added some key elements – not only do they have good taste, but this is a fine remix. Other worthy inclusions include the divinely melodic, slow grower The Daily Match, taken from Lali Puna’s own Micronomic EP, Together In Electric Dreams – the classic Moroder/Oakey early eighties synthpop hit (almost unrecoginsable on this mix except for Trebeljahr’s breathy, muffled lead vocal), and the sprawling, percussive psychosis of Left Handed-Dub. The quality of this remix album is pretty high throughout, in fact I’d go as far as to say that Sixtoo’s mix of Small Things, and To Rococo Rot’s Grin and Bear remix are not even two of the five best tracks available. Two Lone Swordsmen, however, close on top form with an excellent take on Nin-Com-Pop (also remixed by Thomas Leboeg on this compilation) – another dreamy, dark, introspective storyboard of sound, encapsulating Lali Puna’s accessible, yet melancholy approach to making music. All in all, a fine remix tribute that could not have done a better job of showcasing every angle of Lali Puna’s talents. This could make a surprising inclusion into those top ten albums of the year lists. (Barcode Magazine)
