The first Skinny Puppy side-project, Doubting Thomas, consisting of cEvin Key and Dwayne Goettel, had a short lifespan, surviving just three years. Due to the greater demands of Skinny Puppy, and the sad death of Goettel, only two releases saw the shelves: The Infidel and Father Don't Cry, between 1987-1990. Nonetheless, Doubting Thomas came to be featured on many compilations, and formed an important step between Skinny Puppy, and their other well-known side project Download. With a sound very reminiscent of Skinny Puppy and Download, Doubting Thomas is less harsh, less aggressive than the former, and not quite as abstract as the latter. Doubting Thomas is probably one of the least discussed side projects of Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key and D.R. Goettel and also ironically is the first of their many side projects. Unlike their efforts in The Tear Garden or Hilt, the duo here chose to work by themselves rather than with a collective of other musicians. The tracks were written between 1987-1990 and overall represent a much less dense and chaotic side of the band. The songs here use a lot of sampled voices, tons of percussion throughout and generally minimalistic keyboards and sounds. That is not to say that this is a bass'n'drums effort because it is far from that. Rather, the music uses a wide open sound with sometimes distant keyboards, synths and other instrumentation over a fairly complex rhythm set. The music also tends to be more song oriented. The five song single reprises the title track in extended form and appends four unreleased songs to make for a half hour excursion into the minds of DR Goettel and cEvin Key. The compositions tend to lean towards an atmospheric edge meant to garner a certain mood while listening. The most effective piece in that regard is the closer, "That Problem Child". The single on a whole is a pretty disturbing experience, what with the odd voice samples and occasionally unnerving musical contributions of the two men. ~ by John Chedsey |
