Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (164 - 1704)Litaniae de Sancto JosephoLabel: Harmonia Mundi, HMA 1951667 Year: 2007 Performers:Cantus Colln Concerto Palatino Konrad Junghanel - conductor Baroque Salzburg. Up until the beginning of the 19th century the powerful prince-archbishops of Salzburg encouraged the creation of an extremely rich output of religious music. Thus, for instance, the compositions that Biber and Muffat, destined for performance in the Cathedral of Salzburg, are among the summits of the genre, not only in the wealth of their vocal and instrumental forces, but also in their sumptuous sonorities. In order to re-create the acoustic conditions of those in the Cathedral of Salzburg, this recording was made in the Abbey of Melk, thereby offering an ideal symbiosis of place, of music and of performers.Picture it: Salzburg Cathedral, Whitsunday, 1690. For the consecration of Johann Philipp Count Lamberg as Bishop of Passau, this grand space will be filled with the music of Georg Muffat. His 'Missa In labore requies' provides the Mass ordinary for the day, supplemented by instrumental compositions by Heinrich Ignaz Biber and Antonio Bertali. The musicians--double chorus, soloists, and brass--are spread among the cathedral's four choir lofts for the occasion. This is, of course, somewhat hypothetical. Muffat's Mass may well have been composed for this feast in Salzburg, but its actual purpose is unclear from the manuscript. The work is, however, a shining example of the late 17th-century Salzburg Mass, presented here with instrumental interjections as it would have been in its actual church use. The recording is given a further dose of authenticity of sound by the Abbey of Melk, a large, resonant space which lends some of the aura of majesty this music would certainly have in the Salzburg Cathedral. The performances here are excellent--Cantus Colln's singers move easily between solo singing and well-blended ensemble singing; Concerto Palatino provides robust accompaniment for the choral works and brilliant brass utterances in the instrumental pieces.Tracklist:Litaniae Sancto Josepho by Heinrich Ignaz Biber Missa in labore requies by Georg Muffat Sonata for 8 Trumpets and Timpani "Sancti Polycarpi" by Heinrich Ignaz Biber Sonata a 13 by Antonio Bertali Fidicinium sacroprofanum: Sonata no 9 by Heinrich Ignaz Biber Sonata Placidi a 14 by Antonio Bertali LOGSPOILER! | EAC extraction logfile from 5.
