Cindy Blackman - Drums/Leader. J.D. Allen - Tenor Saxophone. Carlton Holmes - Piano, Fender Rhodes, Keybords. George Mitchel - Bass. Works on Canvas is an inspired title for a jazz album, especially one under the leadership of Cindy Blackman. It fits Blackman in her role as a composer - and she is one of the most intriguing composers to have emerged in the past several years - since improvising musicianstreat compositional forms as the canvases on which they create. Yet there is another, deeper resonance to the image, since Blackman the drummer uses sticks and honest-to-goodness brushes to apply her ideas. Despite what your ears might suggest, no mallets are empolyed. The galvanizing drum textures that result are the true field on which her partners are inspired to paint. Tracks: 1. Green Dolphin Street 2. Mudee Ya 3. My Isha 4. The Three Van Goghs 5. Spanish Colored Romance 6. Ballad Like 7. My Ship 8. April In Paris 9. Beautiful World 10. The Three Van Goghs (2) 11. Sword Of The Painter 12. The Three Van Goghs (3) |
