Ritchie Kotzen is in my book one of the most underestimated hard rock guitarists of our time. With Hollywood glam kings Poison he not only recorded their arguably best album ‘Native Tongue’ but also co-wrote a couple of songs on said albulm & was the replacement for Paul Gilbert in Mr.Big during their ‘Get Over It ‘- days.
But that's not all folks, since he was first discovered by Shrapnel Records he has also released a string of solo albums, all with varied success as he doesn’t exactely make it easy on his loyal followers. With every release he changes his style and in most cases this change has little or no musical ties to the famous bands he played in.
But those days of moving from style to style may be over as this is his most melodic solo effort to date, which doesn't mean that it’s pure melodic rock. The sound is more of the modern bluesy melodic rock variety but the end result is quite impressive.
Overall this platter holds the middle ground between more modern, intense & even aggressive songs like opener ‘You Can’t Save Me’ & ‘Sacred Ground’ and the more melodic stuff with great choruses like ‘Misunderstood’ & the simply superb ‘The Shadow’.
Only the truly gifted get away with playing all the instruments, laying down some great vocals and manage to write a couple of splendid tunes in the process as well. That alone is a reason to buy this.
