"Midnight Sound" is the real thing, a musical expedition that charts some new territory, a coherent work alive with vitality and authenticity. With Flanger, Atom Heart and Burnt Friedman found a place where they could indulge their sheer love of playing. "On much of the second album" states Flanger in short, "we played jazz and added the latin flavour wherever we could". With electrically defamiliarized instrument-set-ups, "Midnight Sound" ignores all the stylistic pigeon-holes that critics so love squeezing musicians into. There seems to be nothing Flanger is reluctant to touch upon. Atom Heart and Burnt Friedman's post-electronic themes provide an incredible, ear-opening glimpse into the new directions for popular music - music that may soon make every kind of music we have known before seem obsolete.
