Simon & Garfunkel would become, in essence, the American folk movement's answer to the Beatles, bridging generations and spanning musical styles--if done with an often-dispassionate air of seeming academic disdain--and a ubiquitous fixture in many a 1960s record collection. Yet, there are precious few hints of what was to come on Simon and Garfunkel's 1964 debut. Though recorded during the first few hectic months of American Beatlemania, the Paul and Art of Wednesday Morning are still firmly rooted in Greenwich Village coffeehouse traditions. Their nasally correct take on Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," covers of American folk movement standards like "Peggy-O," "He Was My Brother," "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream," and buoyant gospel-tinged fare ("You Can Tell the World," "Go Tell It on the Mountain") just can't help sounding tres ironic, especially coming from the mouths of two nice Jewish boys from Queens. The early Simon originals here are cast in much the same mold, with the notable exception of "The Sounds of Silence" (offered here in its first, all-acoustic incarnation), a song that underscores the songwriter's looming ability to wrap even the most dour observations in poetically and musically accessible terms that would be the envy of many a Hallmark staff writer. This new edition has been digitally remastered to good effect and also contains three bonus tracks: spare, heartfelt demos of Simon's "Bleecker Street" and the covers "He Was My Brother" and "The Sun Is Burning.

When a retrofit of electric guitars transformed "Sounds of Silence" into Simon & Garfunkel's folk-rock entrée, the partners and their label hastily followed with a like-titled album mixing Paul Simon's acoustic folk songs with plugged-in bids for radio play. By contrast, this successor, released less than a year later, more coherently and convincingly reveals Simon's broadening horizons as a writer and the duo's nascent studio perfectionism. The title song remains a haunting signature piece, relying on acoustic guitar and harpsichord to carry its contrapuntal marriage of English ballad and antiwar plaint; such acoustic delicacy prevails throughout and has proven more durable than by-the-numbers wattage. The first great S&G album, the set includes "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," "Homeward Bound," "Dangling Conversation," and Art Garfunkel's luminous solo piece, "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her." (The 2001 reissue adds a pair of unreleased demos to the original work.

One suspects that Paul Simon cringes a bit when he listens to Simon & Garfunkel's 1966 breakthrough release. Lines from "I Am a Rock" ("For a rock feels no pain / And an island never cries") and the title track ("Fools, said I, you do not know / Silence like a cancer grows") are the essence of sophomoric poetry. And who but a couple of self-serious young men would sequence the suicide odes "Richard Cory" and "A Most Peculiar Man" back to back? That said, every callow couplet found here is counterbalanced by words that are disarmingly guileless. The unabashed romanticism of "Kathy's Song" is truly poignant; it ranks with "For Emily" and "The Only Living Boy in New York" among the duo's most resplendent performances. "April Come She Will" has a similar innocent appeal, while the title track, despite its overwrought moments and Tom Wilson's tacked-on production, is a folk-rock landmark. It's not hard to find fault with The Sounds of Silence, but it's easier still to bask in its inchoate splendor. (The 2001 reissue adds the bonus track "The Blues Run the Game" plus three unreleased 1970 demos.

Track for track, this is Simon & Garfunkel's best album. By 1968, Simon had shed his more precious tendencies as a songsmith. Meanwhile, the duo and coproducer/engineer Roy Halee had become adept studio technicians. "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" displayed the kind of sonic breadth that would flower even more fully two years later with "The Boxer" and "Bridge over Troubled Water." Bits of whimsy ("Punky's Dilemma," "At the Zoo") and melancholy ("Old Friends," "A Hazy Shade of Winter") complete this autumnal album. Jefferson Airplane's debut album is usually not acknowledged, but nonetheless, it's a stunning work of art. And not many people seem to know about Signe Anderson, their original singer before Grace Slick. She's not quite as good as Grace (then again, nobody is), but her voice is still VERY powerful and downright stunning at times. "Chauffeur Blues", her only solo spot on the album, is the best example. Listen to her wail at the end of the song and you'll see what I mean. And I love the line "I'm gonna steal me a pistol and shoot my chauffeur down". Signe was awesome! And look at the pictures of her in the booklet. What a doll she was. Anyway, the rest of the album is spectacular as well. My favorite is the killer "Bringin' Me Down", in which the vocals are irresistable and euphoric. Excellent song. "Let Me In" (is it sex-related?) is one of Kantner's best performances ever; "Blues From An Airplane" is breath-takingly spooky; "Run Around" is mediocre; "Tobacco Road" is a fabulous blues tune and the album closer, "And I Like It", is an emotional epic. The hippie anthem "Let's Get Together" is good, but not really a highlight. "Come Up The Years" and "Don't Slip Away" are simply two of the greatest romantic rock songs EVER recorded. The latter features a wonderful guitar line, too. So that leaves Marty's famous "It's No Secret". It's a very good song, but the band would eventually do it better in concert with Grace.
Most of the bonus tracks are phenomenal, too. "High Flyin' Bird" is wondrous, and there's also a great tune called "Runnin' Round This World". Then there's an alternate version of "Chauffeur Blues", however it's more or less the same as the original. A longer, better version of "And I Like It" is also included.

Excellent re-mastering of this great album and really the first decent sounding CD of "Surrealistic Pillow". Not only do the original tunes get the red carpet treatment here, the bonus tracks are excellent additions as well. A long blues jam is included with "In the Morning" and "J.P.P. McStep B. Blues" sounds better than ever, a previous version was included on the "2400 Fulton Street" collection. There's also a hidden track at the end of the CD that will pleasantly surprise.

New liner notes are well written adding insight to the recordings. Additional photos from the sessions used for the original packaging are included. This re-master has been a long time coming and should move to the head of the class of the JA catalog! A must for any Airplane fan or for those wondering just what the buzz was all about in 1967.

After producing Surrealistic Pillow, a great album which was overshadowed by "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," the Airplane go back to the studio and record their Sergeant Pepper. Lyrically, this album finds the band at their most literary, with James Joyce as a primary inspiration (rejoyce). Thematically, this album foreshadows Abbey Road, with it's songs grouped into five suites. The band proves their mastery of the studio, often switching between stereo and mono for dizzying effect, especially on the intro to Marty Balin's classic, "Young Girl Sunday Blues." (The listener should enjoy this album on headphones at least once for maximum effect.) Jorma's voice finally takes center stage in "The Last Wall of The Castle," while "Spare Chaynge" is little more than a band jam, with fabulous interplay between Jorma and super bassist Jack Casady. No (real)singles here; this album is obviously meant to be heard after ingestion of certain substances, and is meant to be enjoyed as a whole. Enjoy this underappreciated gem to it's full measure, and know that after bathing at Baxter's, you will feel fresh and new.

I have been waiting for years for this. "It'll Shine..." is a terrific album. Although best known for the single 'Jackie Blue', there are no bad songs on this album. From uptempo country rockers like 'Walking Down The Road' and 'Tidal Wave' to ballads like 'Kansas You Fooler' and philosophical sing-alongs like the title cut, there is a consistency of quality missing from the vast majority of popular music. Filling the "country rock" space between Poco and Molly Hatchett, the Daredevils never made it very big in a commercial sense. However, "It'll Shine..." is an intelligent, artistic collection of songs with elements of rock, pop, country, folk, and the blues, with terrific harmonies and well-crafted instrumentation. Not to be missed by fans of thoughtful, listenable music.

А я все никак не возьму... Хотя он у меня есть в не очень, похоже, хорошем качестве. И... что-то не очень вдохновляет. А он точно 65 года? А в 2004 что вышло? Просто CD?

Сам немного запутался, но в сканах обложек видно, что это ©1965, а издание ©2004. В 65-м альбом выходил как сольник Саймона, в 2004-м переиздан с двумя бонусами.

А как вы там с CUE выкрутились? Как это

исправить? Я имею в виду, во-первых, как быть с первым и вторым треками (пока получается, что второй пропадает и вместо второго играет первый), во-вторых, что такое DCP и, в-третьих, какой смысл в таком CUE?

На случаи такой вот "педрятины" - потрековых релизов - есть прекрасная тулза CUE Tools. Ей всего-то нужно скормить CUE (предварительно поменяв в нём .wav на .flac), и она выполнит конвертирование в образ и переделает в нормальный, новый CUE, который 100% будет подоходить к получившемуся образу.

P.S. [edited] Странно, но на оф. сайте есть только родственная программа WAV Tools. На CUE Tools есть ссылка, хотя, на самом сайте она почему-то не отображается. Для работы программы нужно установить платформу .NET Framework v2.0.

Всё-таки, сольник 65-го года - вещь потрясающая. Звучит очень искренне, проникновенно и местами неожиданно свежо для казалось бы, давно знакомой и любимой музыки. Только я не очень понял, он вроде бы записан в Англии и только там вышел на виниле. Но разве CBS - это не америка? Запутался.
