rare release: recordings of the complete works for organ by Messiaen (1908-1992). These 8 CD’s guide the listener through most of the composer’s life, starting with his first published work of 1926 and ending with the 2-CD long Book of the blessed Sacrament (1984).
Messiaen with his great interest in religious matters might be an ideal composer of organ music. This part of his output is typical of his entire oeuvre with a strong emphasis on rhythm and tempo.
Dutch organist Willem Tanke (1959) is specialized in contemporary music. But his repertoire comprises much more, including the complete works by J.S. Bach and Messiaen. His inspired yet conscientious performances optimally make use of the extensive possibilities of the Adema/Schreurs organ at St. Bavo’s in Haarlem.
