Formed in London in '78 with Hynde, James Honeyman Scott, Martin Chambers, and Pete Farndon, the band received massive attention for that hit and other stellar songs from their 1980 self-titled debut album. Excellent Value / The Standard for Retrospective Box Sets, March 17, 2006

I will try to keep this short. Anyone who has appreciated the Pretenders music even casually, such as myself, will value this collection. First, and most important to me, is that the sound quality is excellent. It is packaged very well in a safe, neat, easily accessable and usable manner. The photos and written material are wonderful and well researched. This is no budget box set. It is done with a level of care and professionalism commensurate with the quality of music created by the performers. This would make a treasured gift to someone who enjoys popular music.

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s. With their initial records, the group crossed the bridge between punk/new wave and Top 40 pop more than any other band, recording a series of hard, spiky singles that were also melodic and immediately accessible. Hynde was an invigorating, sexy singer who bent the traditional male roles of rock & roll to her own liking, while guitarist James Honeyman-Scott created a sonic palate filled with suspended chords, effects pedals, and syncopated rhythms that proved remarkably influential over the next two decades.
