Not many rock artists had been allowed to visit the USSR, so Billy Joel's 1987 tour was a big deal. Joel took his task very seriously, embracing his role as musical and cultural ambassador from the West and acting solemnly throughout the tour. Besides the temper tantrum where he pushed his piano off stage, of course, but even that could be seen as a rock & roller taking his message to the people. If you're charitable, that is. That defining moment of the tour is captured at the end of Kohuept (sadly, it was trimmed for a subsequent CD reissue), a live double-album (single-disc) document of the Russian tour. At the time, it may have been a big event, and personally, it was a turning point for Joel, but musically, it wasn't much of anything. Supported by an augmented version of his touring band, Joel runs through a predictable selection of hits, drawing heavily from The Bridge, but making sure to hit such favorites as "Angry Young Man," "Stiletto," "Big Shot," and "Sometimes a Fantasy." For topicality's sake, he adds "Back in the USSR" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'" to his repertoire. All of it is professionally performed, but none of it makes much of an impression, especially since there's little of the energy that is commonplace to live albums; it all sounds like slicker versions of the original studio takes. Perhaps diehard fans would want this as a souvenir of a show they were never able to see, perhaps casual fans would want to use this as a de-facto greatest hits, but they're both likely to be disappointed by this tepid affair. Billy Joel's historic tour of the U.S.S.R. in the mid-'80s was a groundbreaking one. Through the warm welcome by the Russian audiences and unexpected clashes with the Soviet authorities, Joel carved out a path through the then-Soviet Union that other Western rock acts would follow. As a souvenir from the monumental tour, KOHUEPT (Russian for "concert") encapsulates some unique performances that are a treasure for any true fan of the piano man. From the opening traditional Russian piece "Odoya," sung by the Georgian singing group Zhournalist, this is a very special performance. Leading from there into a brilliant rendition of the rocking "Angry Young Man," Joel takes command of the audience like a conquering general. Between-song translations of Joel's touching commentary adds to the drama of a stunning performance of "Goodnight Saigon." More contemporary Joel hits like "An Innocent Man," "Allentown" and "A Matter Of Trust" are thrown in amid the classics "Only The Good Die Young," "Sometimes A Fantasy" and "Big Shot." Finally, Joel appropriately closes with a cover of the Beatles' "Back In The U.S.S.R." and Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changin'."

Выступление в Ленинграде транслировалось в прямом эфире как советского, так и американского радио. В ноябре 1987 в продаже появился двойной концертный альбом Билли Джоэла, названный "KOHYEPT" (на обложке красовалось более понятное, но непригодное для западных хит-парадов слово "КОНЦЕРТ"), а в декабре 1989 года на прилавках музыкальных магазинов был зафиксирован сингл певца с простым и понятным названием "Leningrad". В песне пелось о неком Викторе, который родился весной 1944 года , так и не увидев своего отца . Затем проводится параллель – "я рожден в 49-м, дитя холодной войны времен МакКарти..." И после долгих поэтических размышлений публике предлагался неутешительный вывод "русская жизнь очень грустна, особенно если это жизнь в Ленинграде". Судя по всему, песня родилась под впечатлением от того самого концерта в Ленинграде в 1987 году.
