How it started
It was in the year 1994, the night program of television consisted either of hopeless repetitions or of test cards. The latter was the case with the Bavarian television.

Then we, Andreas Boente and George Scheller, heard that the German re-usable satellite ASTRO-SPAS had a camera on board while doing its 6-day mission. The result has been hours of video of the earth and the space-shuttle. The material was given to us by the German Space Agendy, DARA, and we made someone to convert it from NTSC to PAL. Then combined these beautiful long shots with spherical music - the idea was born to braodcast pictures from the space instead of test cards at night-time.
JOhn Glenn, the first American, who did a space-trip around the world, agreed to make a testimonial for one of the broadcastings, which was not even supposed to be shown in the USA.

But showing 7 nights all the same pictures - that would have been to boring. We called NASA, ESA and DLR and afterthat we knew, that they have lots of video material in their archives made from the Space-Shuttle and the space station MIR.
Klaus-Dietrich Flade, who was the first German visiting MIR in 1992, brought about 10 hours of video material back to earth, that he had filmed on his own. Thereof only some minutes had been shown on TV. Flade gave his o.k. and even agreed to comment his filmings - slowly SPACE NIGHT took shape.

In June 1994 it finally started: SPACE NIGHT closed the gap of the programm of the Bavarian Television in the night.

About the music
The first volume contains ambient pop music.
All following volumes are composed of electronic music only. As you might already think: it`s focussed on spherical, ambient, downbeat tunes. Althought it`s surrely not Club-Music I do not think of it as Chill-Out - it`s pure Electronica.


About this release
So far the compilation consists out of 9 Volumes. Volume 2 to 9 are doppel CDs. - We`ll bring `em all to you ... so check out this post from time to time.

The release is ripped with EAC and brings you one APE+Cue per CD. The Covers are in 300 dpi.

The SPACE NIGHT compilations have been released several times. But even thought there are some good mp3 releases, there has been no real HQ release.
Some of the early volumes you can not buy anymore ... so we thought it might be the right time to archive a great compilation.
