Song listing: 1. Trashed, Lost & Strungout 2. Knuckleduster 3. Bed Of Nails (Alice Cooper cover) 4. She Is Beautiful (Andrew W.K. cover) videos: 1.Trashed, Lost & Strungout 2.Trashed & Lost in Helsinki playing time: 14.56 + videos label spinefarm records, 2004 Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho - Guitars & Vocals Jaska Raatikaienen - Drums Roope Latvala - Guitar Henkka Blacksmith - Bass Guitar Janne Warman - Synths In a way we've been waiting for too long already. Considering the fact that the last regular studio album from CHILDREN OF BODOM was released somewhen in march of 2003, more than 18 months have already passed since the last sign of life. After, this wouldn't be too dramatic or surprising, as the band kept these intervals between their releases always since "Hatebreeder". Nevertheless there's some sort of a not so good feeling that there's something wrong. After all there are only 2 new songs on this EP, because "Bed of Nails" and "She is beautiful" are only coversongs, which originate at ALICE COOPER and ANDREW W.K. Considering the fact that COB never broke the mark of 45 minutes with their albums before, this new EP appears to be quite unproductive in a scary way. At last 'Trashed, Lost & Strungout' and 'Knuckleduster' remain in the proud tradition of COB. Quite dark (death) metal enriched by keyboard tunes. These songs appear to be unusually rough and dirty, even compared to those of the predecessor "Hatecrew Deathroll". It seems Mr. Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho had some frustration to compensate when writing these songs. And so it is taking some turns to get into those songs. It is a bit easier to do that with the titletrack, of which there's a video clip to be found on the CD also, as there are all trademarks in this song which are typical for the band. But I'm having my problems with 'Knuckleduster'. A song like this one would rather have swum in between the other songs on the older albums instead of taking its place in the listener's ears. A pity. Different from that the cover songs are very well done after all. It is even possible to recognize the originals, though both songs are transformed into the COB-style without any remains. COOPER's 'Bed of Nails' is a sing-along in the faster and harder COB-version as well as in the original version though the band really kicks the pedal to ground at the end to turn the chorus into an amazing thrashing orgy which proves that COB would be able to make a stand in the death metal genres (almost) without melody. 'She is beautiful', which is an absolutely happy 'lala-song' anyways, keeps those aspects also when played by CHILDREN OF BODOM. There's also some nice bonus stuff to be found on this album. Together with the already mentioned clip for 'Trashed, Lost & Strungout' there's also an appetizer for the upcoming DVD. "Trashed & Lost in Helsinki" offers nearly 20 minutes with a short but very amusing insight into the wonderful chaotic 'everyday' at COB's. Fans of COB definitely have to get this record. "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" definitely is a very good way to get across the time until the next regular album. If the songs of the next album will be able to match this title track's quality, the next album could mean a new highlight in the musical works of Mr. Laiho. - BLeeding for Metal |
