Tracklist: 1.Line Of Fire 2.Judas Call 3.Holy Graal 4.Prince Of Darkness 5.Anthem 6.Falling Angel 7.Endless Slaughter 8.Sleep With The Devil 9.Edge Of The World Label: Regain Records Playing time: 35:49 Line-up Pete Sandberg (v) Jonas Reingold (b, k, pr) Johan Reinholdz (g) Jaime Salazar (d) Regain is definitely picking up in speed and variety and after TIME REQUIEM we have another band that is giving us some Power Metal out of Sweden and well known the guys are that play it: Jonas Reingold (FLOWER KINGS, MIDNIGHT SUN), Johan Reinholdz (ANDROMEDA, NON EXIST), Jaime Salazar (FLOWER KINGS, MIDNIGHT SUN) and singer Pete Sandberg, so no greenhorns there. When I had it on for the first time, I was kind of put off by the production, because I had the volume not that high up. The next time I decided to put it up a bit higher and see there, the sound works! Even though it still is a little low overall... Musically you can pretty clearly say that they are from Sweden, also without info sheet, because the sound is so Swedish... Located between Melodic and Power Metal, with a certain neo-classical touch it gets as typical as it gets. But still not all hope is lost, meaning that OPUS ATLANTICA are not completely generic, even though they do not really utilise anything that hasn't been there before, to be honest. Still they have some tunes that definitely should attract the attention of a genre-friend, like "Holy Graal" with its good riff and driving rhythm or the excellent un-sappy ballad "Prince Of Darkness" that has a great melody, just like "Falling Angel" that absolutely convinces me with its mix of heaviness and melodies. These songs are what actually save "Opus Atlantica" from the fate of a purely generic product, lifting them up at least far enough to not go under completely, at least for me  So if you are a genre-fan, check them out, you could very well like them!Alex (the Metal Observer) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first song "Line Of Fire" comes in like an arpeggio on crack. Although "Judas Call" has it's slower parts, those are just set up for full on power that comes later. The songs do all retain a neo-classical, Yngwie Malmsteen feel, but with a more modern touch to it all. "Prince Of Darkness" is the first 'power-ballad' of the album and contains all the mandatory cliches, but that is expected with this style. Innovation is not what is desired by the power-metal fanatics, it's blazing guitar work and fast double bass kick drums. That is all here in massive amounts and this includes their take on Bach's "Anthem Cello Suite In G Major". "Sleep With The Devil" was one that stood out as a little slower and a little more kick back on the guitar. Not saying that there is not a guitar solo, but just not the bombastic drums and finger numbing fret work that all the other songs have. In fact, the album ends on a slow note with "Edge Of The World". It's sad that such a power driven album has to end when it sounds more like a lot of 80's hair bands and less like the nuclear warhead that the album started out as. This is the one blaring fault I have with this album. The arrangement of songs really blows! The slower songs should have been put a few places back so that the album could have ended with the vicious attack that is the majority of this release. I do however highly recommend this album to any fans of sped up power metal with guitar work that would give a normal six stringer a career ending case of arthritis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- шведский пауэр-коллектив, который, впрочем, отличается от других шведских групп тем, что не копирует других своих соотечественников, а играет свою достаточно оригинальную музыку. "Opus Atlantica" - проект вокалиста Pete Sandberg и гитариста Johan Reingold. Альбом дебютный, но дай Бог каждой группе делать такие дебюты. Эпический пауэр, выдаваемый этими музыкантами не идёт ни в какое сравнение с тем, что делают другие молодые пауэрные команды. Собственно, эпичность музыки достигается атмосферными гитарами и великолепными, нет, умопомрачительными, хорами. Музыка группы очень мелодична и слушается просто великолепно. Да, конечно, если убрать эпичность, мы получим стандартный пауэр со стандартными гитарными рифами, но без эпичности это была бы совсем другая группа, и оценивал бы я её по-другому. Следует заметить, что "Opus Atlantica" - не симфо-пауэр, хоть клавишные и присутствуют в избытке. Оформление на уровне: фотографии выглядят цивильно, тексты легко читаемы, задний фон красив, но не раздражает. Единственный минус этого альбома - его продолжительность - 35 минут. В остальном же, он просто прекрасен. Не пропустите. (John Sinterson) |
