Slow Train Soul - Illegal Cargo (2004)



Danish electronica producer Morten Varano, best known from his Puddu Varano fame, has teamed up with Lazy Z - the alter-ego of London-based soul jazz singer/songwriter Z Star - to create Slow Train. It’s a difficult task to adequately describe Slow Train’s sound - it’s electronic-based, with touches of jazz, soul, funky breaks and even world music undertones, highlighted by Lady Z’s unique vocals.
The twelve track LP contains quite a diverse range of songs, each one totally different from the last, but not totally removed either. Their would-be anthem "Slow Train" is smooth excursion, littered with throbbing bass, spacey blips and sparse horns, as Lady Z croons her way through the hook. Single "In The Black Of Night"’s haunting keys contrast most of the other offerings on the LP, it’s dark vibe rarely matched elsewhere. The jazzy percussion and piano of "Naturally" give Lady Z a chance to show off her background with the genre, as she takes control of the track and makes herself at home.
"Stoned Rays" brings the tempo down a notch, eliciting a worldly vibe with melancholic horns and a rather depressing piano riff. Z’s laidback delivery perfectly suits Varano’s soundscape. The breaks aspect arrives through "Inna City Woman", as the driving beat is laced with a variety of synthesised keys, weird sound effects, funky guitar and Z’s scatting. The guitar-based "Twisted Cupid" is possibly the requisite ballad here, with essentially just an acoustic guitar and random, high octave keys allowing Lady Z to tenderly sing her well crafted lyrics. "Intuition" brings back the house vibe that Puddu Varano were well known for, though the BPM is a tad low for the dance floor.
The epic "Trail Of Dawn" goes for a second under eight minutes, and is a mix of electronic sounds, piano and eerie strings that take the listener on an aural journey through the world of Slow Train. Finally, the title track "Illegal Cargo (Reprise)" is a spoken word joint yet is predominantly instrumental, and of course, contains a menacing vibe through Varano’s keys, strange sounds and seemingly developing beats.
Illegal Cargo is an extremely diverse project and it’s a nice chill out album that is totally unlike anything else in the marketplace at the moment. [promotion-lift.com]
