Milestones Miles Davis | Columbia Legacy    The aptly titled Milestones collected the initial recordings of a superlative sextet led by Miles Davis (1926-1991). Although the trumpeter's 1959 album Kind of Blue is generally seen as a watershed in modal jazz, "Milestones," the composition, was every bit as important and influential in placing modality on equal footing with hard bop as jazz's lingua franca of the late-1950s. But Milestones, the LP, also established Davis' group (to which the expansive alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley had recently been added, joining trumpeter Davis and rapidly-developing tenorist John Coltrane on the front line) as masters of all they surveyed.    Taken from the Grammy-winning boxed set Miles Davis & John Coltrane -- The Complete Columbia Recordings, 1955-1961, and annotated by Grammy-winner Bob Blumenthal, this expanded edition of Milestones (including two alternate takes) has been beautifully remixed and remastered.
