While I do tend to favor their earlier work, Stabbing The Drama is by no means an inferior album. In fact, to measure it by modern standards, it is an astonishing piece of work that ranks far above the quality of today’s mainstream politics. Gone are the melodic Death Metal sounds that helped to establish the band early on in their career. Replacing that style is a more focused, and dare I say, commercial approach that is filled with lush harmonies, driving rhythms, angst-ridden vocal melodies, and thank God, some downright outstanding guitar solos. This is the point that truly separates these guys from their peers. The title track of the CD leads off with an enormous wall of sound that is guaranteed to send Metalheads into spastic fits almost immediately. The guitar team of Peter Wichers and Ola Frenning are like twin cams in top performing order and frontman Bjorn "Speed" Strid is loaded with an incredible amount of diversity in his vocal delivery. Offering a bit of a positive outlook, Stabbing The Drama attempts to defuse the various plagues of everyday life and give hope for a new future. Rather than just voice dissent for the challenging schemes the world continually throws in the path of us all, Soilwork make an admirable effort to actually deal with the issues on a more personal and individual level. Stand-out cuts include the title track, “One With The Flies”, “Stalemate” and “Weapon of Vanity”. Stabbing The Drama clocks in at an adequate 42:44 and does well in satisfying the listener from start to finish without losing any ground along the way. Even those with a short attention span will appreciate the continuity found here. No doubt Soilwork may just be the next big breakthrough in modern metal. -Priest |
