Thus the hero departs from "The Harbour of Hope" onto "The Stormy seas", which causes him to shipwreck on "The Shores of Utopia". Our hero then discovers Utopia to be an "Ocean Paradise", a place of new starts such as he had searched for. During his stay in Utopia the man learns "The Beauty of Love" yet through his coming to Utopia, the land is doomed during "The Great Rebellion" which angers the Gods, so they destroy this paradise with "Endless Rain". Our unnamed hero is the sole survivor of this disaster causing him to be "Left Alone" "Underneath the Blue". All in all no bad story, I think. Domain’s style is an European style mixture of Symphonic and Melodic metal. Expect a lot of technical high guitar parts with the exceptional style of lead guitarist Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt. On the entire "Last Days" album his high quality guitarplay is evident bringing a lot of atmosphere to the surface. Feelings and emotions are perfectly transitioned through him, almost causing that you feel them yourself. The other instruments are perfectly placed around the guitarplay, contributing to the atmosphere and overall feeling of "Last Days". Mix this with some special sound-effects like windy storms and the sound of battle and the story gets perfectly told through the instruments. The vocals, done by Carsten Shulz, are also very well done. Nothing special on his part though, just a good and clean singing voice, as would be expected from a symphonic metalband. With "Last days of Utopia", Domain has delivered a very nice concept album, with a very original subject. With the music, there’s also nothing wrong but it’s sometimes a bit too focused on the guitarplay, which pushes the other instruments to the background. |
