The Journey label: FaceFront, Oslo, Norway lineup: Bernt Fjellestad: vocals Paul Olsen: guitars Rune Schellingerhout: guitars Dag-Ove Johnsen: bass Vidar Uleberg: drums Machines of Mental Design is a futuristic concept album set in the near future and deals with five Guardians of Time, who study mankind and the reluctance of accepting their fate and their wish for immortality. Combined with the great artwork by Leo Hao (Iced Earth, Blind Guardian), the album looks impressive. Musically, after a small intro (‘Logging On’), the band kicks in with some kick ass power metal. Shredding guitars from the duo Olsen and Schellingerhout, backed up by a good rhytm section, where the bass drum is mixed a bit in the back of the sound. The bass has mainly a supportive function in the songs. Immediately from the start the band sets a high pace and keeps it up, only to slow down occasionally for a moment of rest and melody. One gear down is ‘TriOpticon’, with some smooth guitars (think Metallica – Ride the Lightning) and the vocals are here less high pitched than generally on the album, which I am not particularly fond of. The harmony guitars here, but also on other parts, are quite tasty for the ears. In ‘Puppets of the Mainframe’, the pace is also a bit more laid back and those are the parts on the album I like the most. The main sound is rather standard power metal, including the screamish vocals and I have heard that enough already. Still, the album has enough to offer to stay interesting and I think most power metal fans will enjoy the album. The fact that is a concept piece, shows these guys are not afraid to take on such a difficult task and on the whole they have created a very good album. Nice shredding guitars, solid drums and riveting bass with powerful vocals. Although I find the music at times a bit average, the fact it is a concept piece is a very strong selling point of this album. It is their second release, so I hope they will keep progressing and do not settle to soon with an average sound, but keep going in the direction the took with Machines of Mental Design. --------------------------------------------------- Guardians Of Time [2001] Edge Of Tomorrow |
