But the game ain't over till it's over and as far as I am concerned San Siro Night wins by a nose hair. Not because of the sound quality (for although good it can't match the quality of both Midsummer Nights), not because of an exceptional setlist (although Growin' Up, Follow That Dream and Rosalita are decent songs on any setlist, let alone an awesome Kitty's Back as bonus track) but because of the crushing performance: whipped up by a marvellous crowd Bruce and the ESB get the best out of themselves. There is electricity in the air (literal and figurative) and combined with the Italian feeling for passion, theatre and drama the level of a normal show is surpassed: it becomes a liturgy and "Broetsje" is the pontifex maximus. Even before the show itself the Milan-show had all the ingredients to become a historical one: end of the European leg of the tour, the latent fear that it might be the last time the ESB would perform in Europe in this composition and excellent form plus the fact that Bruce has some Italian blood running through his veins, and is sometimes very aware of it. To make it complete Pluvius took care of an enormous cloud burst during the largest part of the show thus strengthening an already present feeling of solidarity. Quite rightly the concert appears on bootleg and what's more on two labels: Crystal Cat's San Siro Night competes with The Godfather Records' Let It Rain. According to reports there is no large difference in sound quality. The bonus tracks of The Godfather Records is a medley of the May concerts in Brussels, Paris and London while Crystal Cat goes the Italian way by choosing nine songs from the June 8th show in Firenze. Instinctively I prefer the Crystal Cat approach. The entrance of the band is accompanied by Ennio Morricone's Once Upon A Time In The West. Theatrics? Certainly, and indeed effective: goose flesh! And immediately the ropes are cast off with The Promised Land. Perfect showopener in my opinion and the Italian (and foreign) fans apparently agree because it is at once clear that this night Springsteen is not gonna play for but together with his fans. After the Siamese twin The Rising and Lonesome Day follows a lovely version of My Love with a prominent role for Mighty Max. Remarkably that the man (and his hair) still manages it physically. Only after a sincere Ciao Milano there is room to catch some breath. Bruce emphasizes that he and the band are very "excited" to play in Milan. Not only because of the good memories of the 1985 San Siro-concert itself but also because here the romance between Bruce and Patti began. Just like the second evening in Stockholm, Empty Sky is not followed by You're Missing but by a traditional version of The River in which the accompaniment of Soozy's violin adds something extra to the song. On the background there are signals that heavy weather has reached the stadium and the taper has some trouble with the sound quality for quite a while. Bearing in mind the difficult circumstances we can hardly blame him. After Waitin' On A Sunny Day the crowd chanting for Who'll Stop The Rain finally is rewarded, immediately followed by an enthousiastic sung along Growin' Up. During the middle piece Bruce makes himself immortal and forever beloved by referring in his best Italian to Italian fans, who in 1985 passionately chanted "Broetsje", "Broetsje", giving him the feeling that he came back home. How about manipulating your audience! The trio Worlds Apart, Badlands (with lovely Van Zandt solo!) and Out In The Street closes disc 1 leaving the listener behind crushed and with no other choice than to immediately grab for the second CD. The second CD goes further where the first one stopped. Highlight for me is Follow That Dream that is introduced with a simple "una canzone per Milano". Normally one of my favorites already, but this version can leave nobody cold. No Surrender is a good song at any place in the setlist and is followed by Bobby Jean in which Clarence proves that he still pulls his weight. The remaining songs of the second CD follow more or less the standard Rising Tour pattern, on the understanding that the Italian crowd does not forsake for a second. The third CD contains the last two songs from the San Siro concert: after Dancing In The Dark, Rosalita is played as a showcloser for the first and last time in 120 Rising Shows and Bruce and band play it as if their lives depend on it. A "Vi amo, we'll be seeing you" closes a legendary concert. The bonus tracks are as said before from the Firenze-concert. Sound quality is at least as good as that of San Siro Night but the special atmosphere is missing. But there still are some interesting songs: Tougher Than The Rest, at the occasion of Bruce and Patti's anniversario, Seven Nights To Rock and of course Kitty's Back, that -unnecessarily- proves to be a real classic. For those that only go for the perfect sound quality San Siro Night is just one of the many Rising boots and nothing more. But if you are looking for the core of the myth of Springsteen and the ESB as legendary live-artists, then San Siro Night should definitely be in your collection. Fabulous bootleg from the live tour "The Rising" 2003 in San Siro (Italy). (Includes 9 songs from concert in Florence). Quality sound it's incredible!!! (10 in a 10) Enjoy!!!! Hasta luegito... |
