Dungeon is a band which is already immense popular in Australia and Japan. With ‘One Step Beyond’ they are starting their conquest of Europe. Dungeon was formed in 1989 in the desert outback of Australia (but in the meantime the band’s base became Sydney) by vocalist/guitarist Tim Grose, who chose with complacency for the name Lord Tim. A first demo was that successful that the trinket was released as their first album ‘Demolition’. More albums followed, but it is only since 2003 and their contract with Limb Music Products that later albums like ‘A Rise To Power’ became available in Europe too. Flanked by his long time friend and guitar player Stuart Marshall, Lord Tim is still the core of the band and their twin guitar skills make this album a treasure for power metal fans.

These melodic guitar lines are powered by double bass attacks and heavy riffs. If we need to place Dungeon somewhere, it is in the row of bands such as Helloween, Dokken (polyphonic chants and choirs), Blind Guardian and Judas Priest. This is not just a copy though, but delicious stuff with up tempo tracks such as ‘The Power Within’ and the titletrack ‘One Step Beyond’. The step by step tune ‘Against The Wind’ twists to some slower paces, only to push the tension and ‘The Act Of War’ flashes by its dark chants in contrast with Tim’s high pitched vocals. ‘The Hunger’ is the most sensitive track, without being mealy. But the fans will enjoy mostly those two long, epic tracks. ‘Tarranno Del Mar’ starts quiet and later on there is plenty of excellent twin guitar skills to enjoy. ‘Under The Cross’ will surely become the band’s hymn, a majestic battle song that will make you raise your fists in a live situation.
